We are sorry to announce that due to recent fires in the Waimakariri Gorge district between Christchurch and Arthur's Pass, the TranzAlpine is suspended until early April. KiwiRail will be running a replacement coach service for affected passengers until Monday 13 February when Intercity will run daily coach services until the service returns.
The fire has damaged bridges, track and signal systems. Hot and windy conditions meant several bridges along the route were damaged, including one bridge where 12 wooden piles will need to be replaced. Unfortunately the fires occurred in a remote area where it was difficult for the Fire Service and Department of Conservation to bring the spread under control. Thankfully, due to their superb efforts, the fire is now contained and no one was in danger at any point.
We have currently suspended new Bookings for the TranzAlpine through to Monday 3 April and if you were due to travel in the near future then we are deeply apologetic. We will be contacting all affected Bookings. Refunds will be offered to all those who wish to cancel and partial refunds will be offered to those choosing to travel on our replacement coach service.
