Your boy-friend should include you in his application when he applied for immigration to Canada because you two had already lived together for more than 12 months. According to Canadian laws, you two were in the "Common law partner" relationship, which is considered to be spouse.
However, obviously, your boy-friend didn't report you to be his common-law partner. I guessed he reported himself as "Single" and "Never married". It's a contradiction that he reported to be "Single" but now says that he once co-lived with you in Australia. "Dishonesty" is a severe sin in the view of CIC.
Immigration to Canada as a common-law partner is inapplicable to you now.
You two have to marry if you want to move to Canada. Or co-live for another 12 months.
You can apply for a temporary visitor visa to see him in Canada. But the temporary visitor only grants you to stay here for a short time, at most 6 months. And you can't talk of your relationship to him when you apply for the temporary visa, otherwise, your case will be rejected without doubt because of "little intention to leave Canada".
