Answer: Foreign Nationals not exempt from obtaining a visa do NOT require a visa for stays of maximum 90 days in Switzerland, if they hold one of the following UK residence permits.

Depending on their nationality, a visa may still be required for members of diplomatic and consular missions holding temporary residence permits with the endorsement “Exempt Diplomatic”.




Question 2 – I have a UK travel document. Do I need a visa for Switzerland?

Answer: You can travel to Switzerland without a visa only if you have one of the following documents. Please check very carefully.


- UK travel documents, issued to refugees by the Home Office, with blue cover, two black stripes (Gold stripes since 16 August 1996) in the top left hand corner and mentioning agreement of 28th July 1951.


- LATVIA Aliens and UNMIK Travel Document passport, must be endorsed with the UK permit as listed under question 1


- UK travel documents, issued to refugees by the Home Office, with blue cover, two black stripes (Gold stripes since 16 August 1996) in the top left hand corner and mentioning agreement of 28th July 1951.

Question 3 – I have a national passport or official passport or ID card of an EU country. Do I nee a visa?

Answer: No, all citizens of all the EU countries can enter Switzerland without a visa for tourist purposes. But Idendity cards for Bulgaria and Romania are not accepted.


Questions 4 – I have a passport of one of the following countries. Do I need a visa?

Answer: No. If you have a passport of one of the following countries, you do NOT need a visa for visit not exceeding 90 days in Switzerland.

Answer No. If you hold one of the following passports, you do not need a visa for Switzerland for a visit not exceeding 90 days.


Diplomatic passport: Albania, Algeria, Bolivia, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Iran, Macedonia, Moldavia, Marocco, Namibia, Peru, Philippines, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine.


Official passport: Bolivia, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Namibia, Philippines, Thailand.


Service passports: Algeria, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Macedonia, Moldavia, Morocco, Namibia, Peru, Philippines, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine.


Special passport: Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Macedonia, Marocco, Peru, Tunisia, Turkey.



Question 6 – I have a valid authorisation to live in EU or EFTA states, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, Canada or the USA. Do I need a visa for Switzerland?

Answer: National holding a valid authorisation to live in EU or EFTA states, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, Canada or the USA might not require a Swiss visa. In these case, they need to make an appointment with the Visa Section of the Swiss Embassy. The premium rate number is 09065771222 (1.50 min)





Question 7 – I have a national or an official passport of the one of the following countries and a VALID Schengen visa. Do I need a visa for Switzerland?

Answer : Nationals of the following countries can travel to Switzerland without a visa to travel if they hold a passport valid for three months after leaving Switzerland, endorsed with a multi-entry Schengen visa, valid for all Schengen states, valid for all Schengen States:



Bahrain Qatar Thailand

Kuwait Saudi Arabia United Arab Emirates

Oman Taiwan (Republic of China, Ordinary passport only)




Questions 8 – I have a valid UK tourist or visitor’s visa valid for six months or more. Do I need a visa for Switzerland?

Answer: Passport holders with multiples UK C visitors visa need a Swiss visa unless their national passport allows them to travel without a Swiss visa to Switzerland (see Question 4). Swiss visas must be applied for and obtained from the Swiss Embassy/Consulate in their own country of residence. The Swiss Embassy in London is not authorised to issue Swiss visas to multiple UK visitor’s visa holders.



Questions 9 – How long does the passport have to be valid?

Answer: If no visa required, the passport has to be valid when leaving the Switzerland. If a visa is required the passport has to be valid for at least three months after leaving Switzerland.


Question 10 – How long does the UK permit have to be valid?

Answer: The permit has to be valid when leaving Switzerland



Question 11 – I am student in the UK. Do I need a visa?

Answer: If you hold a valid national passport endorsed with a valid permit for the UK you do not require a visa for a visit not exceeding 90 days. See question 1.



Question 12 – I am a UK or EU national and would like o take up a job in Switzerland. Do I need a visa or a work permit?

Answer: You should get in contact with the local authority of the relevant canton in Switzerland. The address can be found on the website of the Federal Office for Migration : WWW.BFM.ADMIN.CH



Question 13 – I want to study/work for more than three months in Switzerland. Do I need a Swiss visa?

Answer : If you are NOT an EU or UK national you need a visa and therefore have to apply it at the Swiss Embassy.


Question 14 – If a visa is needed for Switzerland, do I have to make an appointment? Answer : Yes, you have to schedule an appointment prior to your visit to the Embassy by calling the following premium rate number : 09065771222 (1.50 min)


Questions 15 – Do I get the visa on the same day? Answer: No, please note processing takes 24 hours or next working day.


Question 16 – What is the visa-fee? Answer : The fee is £ 27.50 in cash only. This can vary to the exchange rate.


Question 17- Has Switzerland already joined the Schengen visa Scheme? Answer : No, but it is likely to join at the beginning of 2009.

Important notice

Switzerland aims to join the Schengen visa scheme on 5 December 2008. Therefore all foreign nationals residing in the UK who require a Schengen visa will from that date onwards also require a Schengen visa to enter Switzerland.


In order to ensure that persons affected by these changes can finalise their travel plans in time for the Christmas/New Year holiday season the Swiss Embassy London will be issuing - with immediate effect - Swiss visas valid for Switzerland only as a precautionary measure to persons who:


intend to travel to Switzerland between 5 December 2008 and 5 January 2009

do not already hold a valid Schengen visa

and are travelling to and from Switzerland by air only.

In these cases, it is strongly recommended in your own interests that you apply for a Swiss visa valid for Switzerland only as soon as possible but not later than 30 November 2008.
